State of the Judiciary and the Gov talks too

By on February 8, 2010

smlogoMonday, February 8, 2010— the first day of the Wyoming Legislature’s Budget Session.  The primary purpose of the session is to set the budget for the next 2 years.  The new budget year begins on July 1, 2010 and runs through June 30, 2012, so we refer to the budget as the 11-12 budget, even though part of it is in 10.  This morning there is a reception at the Wyoming Supreme Court.  I chair the House Judiciary Committee, so I will attend that reception, since many of the requests coming from the Judicial Branch comes through my committee.  At 10 a.m., the Chief Justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court will give the State of the Judiciary speech and also the Governor will give the State of the State address.  These are broadcast live on Wyoming PBS or you can listen to the live stream over the Wyoming Legislature’s website.

The legislature will take a short break for lunch after the speechifying and then we will get down to work.  Because it is a budget session, any non-budget bill has to get a 2/3 vote of the body to be introduced.  So most of today will consist of quick votes on bills for introduction.  This evening, my committee, the Judiciary Committee will be taking testimony on two bills.

HB 8  Peace Officers – court security officer

HB 17 Carbon Sequestration -financial assurances and regulation
