By on June 25, 2013

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Just a glance at JacksonHoleLive’s five-show concert series for this summer gets the blood pumping. Acts include Old Crow Medicine Show, Steve Earle and the Dukes, Robert Walter’s 20th Congress, Jeff Austin and Friends, and kicking it all off this Saturday, Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real. Shows that would normally be priced in the $20 to $60 range are coming to us free, courtesy of Snake River Brewing and 40 local supporting businesses.

Lukas Nelson

Lukas Nelson

For locals that haven’t caught Willie Nelson’s 24-year-old offspring, it’s safe to say you are living in a cave up Death Canyon. Lukas is prolific, occasionally shirtless and a ball of fiery on-stage energy with Hendrix-esque wailing in the reedy familiarity of the family’s nasally vocal tone. He has made more than a half dozen stops in Teton County over the last few years, establishing a timeline that has allowed many to enjoy his progression up close.

Happening in conjunction with this concert is the Second Annual Outerlocal Summer Games on Snow King Mountain, featuring running, bouldering, mountain biking, paragliding and much more. Check for more info.

JacksonHoleLive presents Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real with guests The Flannel Attractions, 4:30 p.m., Saturday, at Snow King Ball Field. All ages. Free.

Victor’s Music on Main

Can you believe this is Music on Main’s eighth season? Teton County’s free, family-friendly community concert series is now firmly established on Thursday evenings in the beautifully shaded Victor City Park.

This week marks the first of seven weeks of high-caliber bands. Fox Street All Stars is a steamrolling machine driven by funky grooves and soulful rock grit that rivals Derek Trucks Band and Band of Heathens in terms of Southern-roots textures. Easily one of the most talented of the regional up-and-coming bands that has put Jackson on its regular tour schedule, the Denver-based All Stars sold out the Pink Garter Theatre on New Year’s Eve.

Opening the show is local indie rock quartet The Alta Boys. Fronted by talented songwriter Ken Dolman and backed by keyboardist Vance Freed, bassist Troy Hilary and drummer Chris Szymanik, these guys have some really inviting original material that is built for the big stage.

Teton Valley Foundation’s Music on Main presents Fox Street All Stars with guests The Alta Boys, 6 p.m., Thursday, at Victor City Park. All ages. Free.

Hot Club of CowtownSoundcheck Fest in Pinedale

There has been a free, under-the-radar (to Jacksonites at least) music festival happening in Pinedale for the last five years. Pinedale Fine Arts Council’s Sixth Soundcheck Music Fest has again staged a terrific lineup headlined by an Austin entity, the hard-swinging Western swing trio, Hot Club of Cowtown. The band, heavily influenced by the combo of guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli, as well as Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, recently celebrated its 17th birthday and has released a dozen albums.

Two duos round out the bill: the hard-driving backwoods blues of Hymn for Her and the brilliantly named, Pinedale-based The Boom and The Bust.

6th Annual Soundcheck Music Fest, 5 p.m., Saturday, at American Legion Park in Pinedale. All ages. Free.

Byron Tomingas

Byron Tomingas

Tomingas’ Birthday and lucky No. 7

Performing on the very spot where he was born, native classical guitar virtuoso Byron Tomingas will play St. John’s Episcopal Church on Thursday. He also will be releasing his seventh album, No. 7 in conjunction with his annual Birthday Concert.

Unlike most classical guitarists, Tomingas knows how to use the guitar’s full spectrum with highly varied strums while still delivering the sweetest tones, gentle notes and sensual passages within a repertoire that also bends into popular music.

Byron Tomingas Birthday Concert, 7 p.m., Thursday, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, and 6 to 9 p.m., Fridays and Sundays, at Jenny Lake Lodge.
