Police: Pedestrian Struck By Vehicle Was Intoxicated

etbadgepatchJackson, WY – The pedestrian struck by a vehicle Wednesday night on S. Highway 89 near Whole Grocer was under the influence of alcohol, according to a press release issued Thursday by Jackson Hole Police Department.

Javier Hernandez Maldonado, 46, of Jackson was seriously injured when he attempted to cross a shadowy section of Highway 89 void of street lights or a crosswalk. Lieutenant Cole Nethercott of the JH Police Department said after officers on the scene determined Maldonado’s condition life-threatening he was immediately taken to St. John’s Medical Center and then transported to University Hospital at the University of Utah, where he remains in critical condition.

Upon conclusion of the investigation, the motorist involved in the accident has not been found at fault.

Although officers have determined Maldonado was under the influence at the time of the accident, his official Blood Alcohol Content level has not been released, Nethercott said.

This is the second pedestrian that has been struck by a vehicle in the unlit portion of S. Highway 89 near Whole Grocer, Nethercott noted. Myriad wildlife collisions have also transpired in the area.
